Even a bad hand could turn you into a winner.

The highest and lowest hands share the kitty in a hi-low game of poker. General poker rules apply to the highest hand (card 4) A good low game would be if a player has A, 2, 3, 4, 6 or what is referred to as the ‘6 down’. (A, 2, 3, 4, 5 is considered a low hand in some cases.)

Normally the lowest high card decides the winner of a low hand. If the highest card is the same then the next highest cards must be evaluated.  Let us say a player has 2, 3, 4, 7, 8 and another player has 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, then the second beats the first player since his second highest card is a 6 while the first player ’s second highest card is a 7.

In some games of poker such as seven card stud poker where more than five cards are dealt, the players could for both the high and the low. By and large this is mostly played in games consisting of wild cards. That is not to say it can’t be played in game without wild cards. Let us say one is playing seven card stud and a player has A ♥ , 2 ♥, 3 ♥, 4 ♥ , 5 ♥, 6 ♣ , 8 ♦ the player stands a chance to win the low hand (A, 2, 3, 4, 6) as well as the straight flush high hand.

Observation: A player who declares high and low must win both. If he loses either one hand, the opponent with the best high hand shares the kitty with the opponent with the best low hand. Except for one difference hi-low is also played just like the other games of poker. Before the final wager or just before declaring (dealer ’s decision), the players have to state whether they are going for the high or low hand.

Usually the players declare it by placing chips in his hand. Only the players are going for the high hand, hold a chip in their hands, and those going for both hands hold two chips in their hands. The players sit at the table with a closed fist, which they open when the dealer asks them to show whether the player is going for the low or poker high hand. If there is only one player going for either the high or low game, he walks away with the kitty.

All the players show their cards after they’ve declared. (The declaration differs in some cases. In some cases the players declare in order, in this case the player who was last to raise gets to be the first player to declare. The last person to declare is benefited in this manner since he knows what other players are declaring and consequently he can appropriately his declaration.

On the other hand in some poker games all the players show their cards at the same time after the last wager, that way it is apparent to all the players, who has won.) If the kitty can’t be shared equally, then either the player with the high hand keeps the kitty or it could be put towards the next games’ kitty.
